ARE YOU A MARKETING & COMMS LEADER STRUGGLING TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY AS A BUSINESS LEADER AT THE TOP TABLE?

October 08, 20242 min read

Anyone who knows me, knows that elevating the Marketing and Communications (M&C) profession is a topic close to my heart and my ‘why’ for Turas. I want to help M&C leaders break through the glass ceiling to be respected, influential business leaders at the top table.

I don’t for a minute underestimate the challenge this statement represents – it requires a mindset and systemic change. In my own career, I've achieved this in some organisations and others have been a real struggle - stereotyped and stuck in the reactive slog, seen as an 'add-on' not vital to business success.

THE TRADITIONAL PATH TO CEO 👣
The journey to the top table is traditionally dominated by paths through Finance or Human Resources. This creates a ‘de facto glass ceiling’ for us as M&C leaders because our paths are less directly represented. Stagnation and disconnect result, prompting talented professionals to consider leaving the profession. Sadly, I’ve seen it.

COMPARING SECTORS: PUBLIC VS PRIVATE
Having worked in both, I've seen the disparity that exists which complicates the issue. In the private sector, I've encountered more defined promotion routes where performance metrics and results-oriented achievements create clearer advancement opportunities.

In the public sector, career advancement can be linked to tenure, policy knowledge, and stakeholder engagement capabilities. Though this presents varied experiences, it can limit the speed of progression.

OVERCOMING CAREER PROGRESSION BARRIERS
There are steps we ourselves can take to overcome these barriers:

1. Grab every opportunity to take projects/roles that offer you exposure to different parts of the business - enhance your business acumen, enterprise-wide thinking, showcase your business leadership skills and versatility.

2. Build relationships with senior leaders who provide perspective on navigating the complexity of an ever-changing context, how to communicate and negotiate at a senior level, and advocate for your ability and presence at the top table.

3. Stay updated with the latest business trends and strategies and participate in relevant courses to set you apart.

4. Showcase Your Achievements that highlight your strategic value to the organisation and its success.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE: BRIDGING THE GAP
While we can do 'our part', it’s imperative the Executive and senior management recognise, nurture and leverage the ‘full’ potential of their M&C leaders. Opportunities for career growth. Addressing systemic barriers. This will foster an inclusive environment driving both individual and organisational success.
