SETTING YOUR STAKEHOLDERS STRAIGHT ON MARKETING & COMMS STRATEGY VS. IMPLEMENTATION

Ever found yourself in the whirlwind of creating a Marketing and Communications strategy at pace, only to realise your stakeholder is actually expecting you to produce a implementation plan? 🤔

It’s a common challenge we face, especially when time is tight and communications are rushed. Setting clear expectations about what you’re ACTUALLY going to deliver right upfront is critical and saves a lot of pain and frustration.

Often the lines get ‘blurred’ with people using one word but meaning another. So I’ve created this simple overview of the difference between the two for you to use with your stakeholders as the first crucial step in creating killer strategy.

HOW TO EXPLAIN THE CORE DIFFERENCE
Get them to think of it as the Master Plan (strategy) vs. the Action Blueprint (implementation). While strategy sets the direction and decision-making framework, implementation is all about rolling up your sleeves and getting things done.

Strategy: The Roadmap to Success
o Provides direction and alignment
o Acts as an umbrella view, recognizing that it ‘lives’ and may need to flex and adapt
o Essential for making the right decisions when circumstances change
o Keep it concise – a one-page strategy ensures everyone can understand and remember it.

Implementation Plan: Bringing It to Life
o Ensures accountability and action
o Handles resourcing and measurement

Remember:

Your strategy acts as your guide to making the right decisions when things change. It’s not set in stone – it should live, breathe and evolve, just like your organisation.

Trying to make decisions based on an Implementation plan is like using a hammer to fix a lightbulb – you’re looking at the wrong tool!
